People of Marquette Portrait Series - Call for People!

People of Marquette Portrait Series As part of Art Week, Make it Marquette is beginning a portrait project aiming to uplift and celebrate the people in Marquette that make up our vibrant community. Why People of Marquette? Places need people to create both culture and community. The photo project will highlight residents with a portrait showcasing their connection to Marquette. Participants may choose a location, within Marquette city limits, to be photographed and will receive a digital copy of their portrait including rights for photo use. Participation is free! The images will be featured during Art Week (June 24-29, 2024) and have a permanent home in City Hall beginning Fall 2024. All photos taken by local photographers Stefani Vargas & Aubry Healy. Marquette is located on the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabe Three Fires Confederacy. This land is now and has always been the home of the Anishinaabe people, who carry the will, intention, and memory of those seven generations ago so as to continue in relation to the land in a good way seven generations in the future. CALL FOR ARTISTS: “GRATITUDE” BIKE PATH MURAL

The Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC) has extended a call for artists to design and paint the word GRATITUDE as a part of the City bike path murals. The Words to Live and Bike By project links language, exploration, and artistic expression to invite Marquette and its visitors to connect as a community. These words were originally selected by MPAC prior to their first installation onto the Holly Greer bike path in 2020. Four years later the original murals have faded and yet, the importance of these words persists. The recent call for artists produced many wonderful submissions; however, no artist applied for “GRATITUDE”. MPAC now invites applications specifically for the word: GRATITUDE located on the south side of the Marquette Commons Applicants may submit multiple designs but will only be selected to create one mural. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, May 5th. Artists will be notified by May 10, 2024, with painting to occur on June 24-29, 2024 during City of Marquette Art Week. The selected words will be stenciled on the bike path with white outline prior to painters’ arrival on-site. Completed murals will be 6 ft. in height and vary in length depending on the length of the proposed word. CALL FOR ARTISTS FRESH COAST PLEIN AIR PAINTING FESTIVAL IN MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN Come paint with us in Historic Marquette, Michigan and on the shores of awesome Lake Superior! Pre-registration is now open for the Fresh Coast Plein Air Painting Festival, featuring $2500 in awards and prizes. Paint in one or both of the plein air sessions for one price: DUSK to DARK – Friday, June 28, 5:00 – 10:00 pm. Capture the essence of the evening light as it turns to darkness! Completed artwork must be turned in by 10:00 pm PAINT THE DAYLIGHT – Saturday, June 29, 7:00 am – 4:30 pm. Capture diverse and beautiful landscapes, architecture, and shoreline areas of Marquette!
