On Wednesday, December 19 at 7:00 pm, the Peter White Public Library will host a meeting of its science fiction book group, Klava Klub, at Contrast Coffee, located at 600 N. Third St. Marquette.
In Adulthood Rites, the second book of Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis series, humans have been returned to Earth, divided into two groups: those who have submitted to the Oankali vision to create a new hybrid species and the resisters who would rather be sterile and die off than submit. After creating numerous female constructs, the Oankali are finally ready for a male child, Akin, the son of Lilith Iyapo. As a child, he looks very human with only a sensory tongue to physically distinguish him from other humans. Stolen from his human/Oankali family, Akin experiences first-hand the despair of the resisters, leading him to his life mission, to fight for human’s right to exist as a species.
