The City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture invites you to immerse yourself in the local arts scene through a series of exciting events that promise to inspire, educate, and entertain. October is National Arts & Humanities Month and Marquette is choosing to celebrate alongside thousands of other organizations, individuals, and communities through a weekend of opportunities to connect and appreciate the impact that Arts and Culture has on our lives.

Discover National Impact – Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 Study Launch Event

Thursday 10/12 2:00-3:00pm, VIRTUAL hosted by Americans for the Arts

Marquette was one of 373 communities spotlighted in this national study that measures both the economic and social impact of the arts and culture industry. This virtual event will unveil the major findings of the study and kick off the dissemination of local-centric impacts for our region. The City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture worked closely with the Upper Peninsula Arts & Culture Alliance to survey the U.P. region over the past year. The previous study, conducted in 2017 documented that the nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $166.3 billion in economic activity which supported 4.6 million jobs and generated $27.5 billion in government revenue. Experience Local Art – Opening Reception for Public Gallery Program Exhibits

The Public Gallery Program is a collaboration between the Peter White Public Library and the City Office of Arts and Culture aimed at providing inclusive and accessible exhibit space for both artists and audience. Gallery spaces are free to visit during library hours. Exhibits will be on display through mid-November. Receptions are free to attend and light refreshments are provided. Connect with a variety of local artists and art appreciators. Carol Phillips is an arts educator for Powell Township schools, has exhibited her work nationally, and is the founder of Liberty Children’s Art Project. David Schmitt is the NMU DeVos Art Museum preparator and has additional artwork displayed as a guest artist at Graci Gallery for the month of October. Steven Leuthold is a professor of art and design history at NMU’s school of Art & Design. Cade Musich received a BFA with a concentration on Photography at NMU and now is based in Traverse City, MI.

Innovate Marquette SmartZone recently opened the doors of their ProtoLab, a specialized lab equipped with state-of-the-art 3D printing technologies that supports local entrepreneurs by helping to transform 2D designs into working concept models. IMQT also serves as a resource hub, capital connector, and start-up support for new businesses and product developers in the Marquette area. Whether you are interested in resources to accelerate your ideas or simply want to explore the economic development hub downtown, join us for a cup of coffee to kick off your Friday morning!


Public Art Walking Tour – Public Art Past, Present, and Future

Saturday 10/14 2:00-4:00pm (Walking Tour departs at 2:10pm, Return for coffee and conversation by 3:15pm), Provisions MQT (401 S Lakeshore Blvd)

Join us for a Public Art Walking Tour, led by Arts & Culture Manager Tiina Morin, around the ever-changing Founders Landing area on a short route accessible to all. Explore the public art and City’s conservation program at Father Marquette Park, learn about private murals and the City’s public art policy at Loyaltee’s building and see the site and plan for the upcoming “Seven Grandfather Teachings” stone sculpture by Anishinaabeg artist Jason Quigno. The tour will spark thought-provoking conversations about the role of public art in shaping our vibrant community.

*This tour is wheelchair accessible and covers a 2-block radius beginning and ending at Provisions MQT coffee shop.


Annual Art Awards – Celebrate Our Community
Sunday 10/15 6:00-9:00pm, Masonic Red Room Theatre (128 W Washington)

This red-carpet affair honors outstanding individuals who have made an impact in arts and culture in Marquette. This year’s awards show is made possible by Innovate Marquette Smart Zone.

This event is free and open to the public with a semi-formal suggested dress code to match the occasion. Begin the evening with a Cocktail Hour for connecting and celebrating with our arts & culture community. The Awards Show will begin promptly at 7:00pm and feature several performances along with honoring this year’s recipients:

National Arts and Humanities Month is coordinated by Americans for the Arts, the national organization working to empower communities with the resources and support necessary to provide access to the arts for everyone. This month-long celebration grew out of National Arts Week, which was started in 1985 by the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts.
