ART WEEK Waawiyeyaa

ART WEEK Waawiyeyaa

Presented by City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center at South Beach Park

Waawiyeyaa will close out the Tuesday of Art Week with a special performance in South Marquette. Waawiyeyaa is a local Anishinaabe-based rock band with all original music, comprised of Tom Biron, an Anishinaabe tribal elder on guitar; Dr. Jud Sojourn, an Abenaki professor of Native American studies that teaches Anishinaabemowin on guitar and vocals; Danny Garceau, an Anishinaabe veteran and traditional flute player; Jeff Bailey, an Anishinaabe college student in Native American studies on bass guitar; and Dr. Martin Reinhardt, an Anishinaabe professor of Native American studies on hand drum and lead singer/songwriter.

Waawiyeyaa is an Anishinaabemowin term that means “it is a circle.” As such, attendees will be encouraged to dance and sing along. Many of the band’s lyrics celebrate Indigenous themes, including Mother Earth’s healing waters.

This activity is part of the City of Marquette's 2022 Art Week. For more information on Art Week, visit our Art Week homepage. For a full listing of this year's events, click here. Please note that event details are subject to change; online listings will be updated as necessary.
