Words to Live and Bike By - Respect

Artist: Stella Larkin
Project supported by Superior Watershed Partnership

“Stella and I felt it was important to stress the importance of respecting the magic, power, and vulnerability of the natural world; Lake Superior, forests, winter, weather, wildlife, and humanity,” writes Carl Lindquist, Executive Director of the Superior Watershed Partnership. “Without getting too philosophical I think we were trying to show how RESPECT for Lake Superior, wildlife and our natural environment is tied to how we treat each other as human beings. More respect is always a good thing, especially in these stressed-out times!”

The mission of the Superior Watershed Partnership is to protect and improve the natural resources of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on a watershed basis; by promoting responsible individual and community actions that ensure a sustainable environment, encourage a sustainable economy and help improve quality of life.
Stella Larkin is a mixed media assemblage artist. She has collaborated with the Superior Watershed Partnership on various educational outreach projects

The Words to Live and Bike By project involves the painting of five text-inspired, site-specific murals on the surface of the Holly Greer Bike Path in Marquette. Applicants were asked to submit design proposals that reflect a unique and imaginative interpretation of each word and their accompanying locale. This project was brought to life by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission.
