RECONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF THE ARTS

Words to Live and Bike By - Remember

Artist: Michele Tuccini

“I remember the Founders Landing area when we first moved here 35 years ago, with the big storage tanks and overgrown areas, and I marvel at what it is today and how much it has improved the shoreline area of downtown Marquette,” Tuccini writes. “Using bikes as a theme for this bike path project seemed like a no-brainer, and I wanted to tie in the ‘remember’ theme with what bikes used to be and how they have changed even during our lifetime.”
Michele Tuccini is a local watercolor and mixed media artist in Marquette. She serves as the president of the Lake Superior Art Association and also as a docent at the Art Outreach program for the DeVos Gallery at NMU. Other local artists that contributed to the installation: Julie Mowen, Marlene Wood, Gail Mahan, Susan Roubal, and Connie Tonkin.

The Words to Live and Bike By project involves the painting of five text-inspired, site-specific murals on the surface of the Holly Greer Bike Path in Marquette. Applicants were asked to submit design proposals that reflect a unique and imaginative interpretation of each word and their accompanying locale. This project was brought to life by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission.
