Trestle Bench III (Commons)

Artist: Dale Wedig

This collection of five benches was made from repurposed chunks from the rooftop-level train trestle that once passed through downtown Marquette, crossing Front Street and ending in Lake Superior. This part of the Soo Line, and then the Wisconsin Central railroad system, was used from 1930-2000 to transport iron ore from local mines to transport ships in Lower Harbor. Wedig’s bench forms, which feature large rivets and structural steel, highlight the mining history of the Upper Peninsula. The City of Marquette commissioned the seating in conjunction with funds to commemorate artist Jane Hiebel.
