RECONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH A SHARED LOVE OF THE ARTS

Mino Bimaadiziwin

Artist: Sawftsea

“Mino Bimaadiziwin” translated from Anishinaabe as “Living the Good Life” is the title of a new mural by local artist Sawftsea. Painted in acrylics, this mural is an homage to the Anishinaabe teachings and the importance of our waterways. The mural was crowdfunded and paid for by the public, in collaboration with Peter White Public Library which offered space above the Library’s native plant garden on the west side of their property along Third Street. Keweenaw Bay Indian Community members, Glen Bressette Jr. and the late, Glen Bressette Sr. collaborated with local artist Sawftsea to communicate the wisdom of Anishinaabe elders and share stories of protection and respect for our waters. Anishinaabemowin syllabics are integrated into the background of the piece. The mural also depicts the hands of water walker and protector Grandma Josephine Mandamin. In the painting her hands dip into Lake Superior purifying the water with her sacred copper vessel beside her.
