The Marquette Poets Circle is a group of local poets who plan events, workshop poems, borrow books and literary journals, share submitting tips for publication and contests, and discuss the poetry business. The Marquette Poets Circle is a member of the Poetry Society of Michigan. On the 1st Monday of each month the Marquette Poets Circle sponsors Open Mic for short prose or poetry, open to anyone, with a sign-up list at the door. The Upper Peninsula Poet Laureate Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that promotes poetry and the spoken word through public readings, workshops, virtual events and digital platforms. The foundation celebrates the U.P. and its cultural heritage through poems in online or print publications and champions past and present U.P. poets. The Upper Peninsula Poet Laureate serves a two-year term, which may be renewed one time. The laureate represents all 15 counties of the Upper Peninsula.
Zero Degrees Gallery is the united effort of almost forty established and emerging local artists, exhibiting and selling their work through the gallery. Located in Marquette, Michigan, and formed in 2010, the gallery includes a dynamic and diverse group of artists who want to support artistic endeavors in the community, while providing a year-round venue for their work. Zero Degrees Gallery’s name is a triple entendre: (1) the founders of the gallery, none of whom had art degrees, (2) the perception that we live in a cold place, and (3) the commitment to creating zero degrees of separation between our artists and our customers. Zero Degrees Gallery Marquette is a non-profit corporation that serves our community by helping local independent artists succeed, offering high quality art to the community, and providing art education programs.
The gallery strives to create an immersive art experience for visitors who are looking to buy or just looking for inspiration. The main gallery features an individual artist show, while permanent collections include art offered from resident and renting artists. A high-quality print shop is available for artist prints of photos and 2D art.
The Gallery is a project of the Marquette Artist Collective, beginning in November 2018, as a way to support the arts in our community. The Gallery is in the heart of downtown and is a great space to display artwork seen by locals and tourists. The permanent “members gallery” holds up to fifteen artists, and any current Marquette Artist Collective member can apply, while there is also a rotating exhibition gallery.
The mission behind Niik Creative Co. is to bring quality and authenticity into the world, one piece at a time. After graduating from the Ceramics program at Northern Michigan University, Niikah Hatfield took ownership of Revisions Design Studio and created her own ceramic studio and gallery in 2020. Starting from the finest materials, each piece of work is lovingly handmade with the intention to bring the purity of conscious living into life. All work is crafted by the team in the small studio, or sourced from other local artisans in the Upper Michigan area.
Graci Gallery opened late June of 2020 by owners Tina and Joe Graci. Joe has been maintaining his studio practice in Marquette and traveling the country displaying his art for over a decade. Most of the art displayed comes from established artists from all over the country, but it is of great importance to show the works of local artists as well. In addition to local artworks in the main gallery, a second space hosts one-day pop-up sales throughout the summer and fall. The purpose of the pop-up gallery is to allow for further engagement with the local and regional art community as well as show a wider range of artwork.
Rustico. features locally made, handcrafted rustic furniture, decor and structures. Since 1993, Rustico. has been making custom pieces made of log and driftwood, including mirrors, beds, lamps, coat racks, table sets, bar stools, pub tables…and much more!
Created and operated by Madeline Goodman, the goal of Madgoodies is to bring artist’s and makers from all around together in one spot. After joining NMU’s Art Department, where she received an Associate’s Degree in Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metal Smithing, Goodman’s passion for promoting local art bloomed. The shop now consists of Northern Michigan University students, alumni, and other local community members.

It is the UP’s premier destination for fine art, beautiful handcrafted fine gifts and exquisite one-of-a-kind, hand-sculpted jewelry. Epps Apothecary carries abstract art, paintings, Lichtenberg wood art, textile art, dishes, jewelry and other fine gifts.
Ann lives and works in Marquette, Michigan that sits on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Her ceramic work is strongly influenced by the natural world, a love of simple and elegant architecture, and a childhood fascination with the objects used for enacting sacraments from her Catholic upbringing. Ann welcomes the opportunity to work with clients in designing something special.
Gordon Gearhart Blacksmith
Gordon E. Gearhart is an artist-blacksmith living and working in Marquette, Michigan. With a background in sheet metal and foundry work as well as basic blacksmithing skills, he pursued a degree in Industrial Technology at Northern Michigan University. While attending NMU, Gordon enrolled in a blacksmithing course in the Department of Art and Design. From that point on, using iron and steel to explore sculptural and functional forms became the focus of study. Since 1997, Gearhart has made his home in the Marquette area. He has participated in numerous art and craft shows in the Upper Peninsula.
Adorned Smithing Co. (located in Studio Alchemy)
Adorned Smithing Co. was founded by Emerson Graves, who created this shop to leave her art as a significant part of her legacy. The pieces are inspired by natural stones, the old southwest, and vintage handmade metal stamps. Each element starts as a simple Sterling Silver sheet and wire. With her own two hands and use of tools, Graves draws, pierces, stamps, files, form, solders, sands, and polishes each one into fruition. They are all raw, one of a kind, and built to last the ages.

The Deo Gallery is an ingredient of the City of Marquette’s Arts and Culture Center. The gallery is curated by the Lake Superior Art Association, featuring a monthly display of art for the Upper Peninsula’s public. With an offering of artists in all mediums, the Deo Gallery’s unique selection is an opportunity for the community to come together in a space and share their love for creativity and arts.
Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU
The Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center is a historical museum and educational facility on the campus of Northern Michigan University. The mission of the U.P. Heritage Center is to promote and preserve the history and culture of the Upper Peninsula through an active slate of exhibitions and engaging public programs for the whole region. The center also collects and preserves artifacts related to the history of Northern Michigan University. The center maintains a gallery in Gries Hall and several other displays throughout campus.
The DeVos Art Museum enhances the mission of Northern Michigan University through exhibitions and programs that engage creative culture across campus, local and regional communities. The Museum hosts 8-12 contemporary art exhibitions each year. The permanent art collection features early and contemporary photography, prints, modern and contemporary design, local and regional art, American Illustration, Japanese art, and Native American art. The Museum opened in 2005 after the completion of the new museum building, designed by HGA Architects. The Museum is part of the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University (NMU) and was endowed by a gift from the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Foundation.

Welcome to one of the most beloved attractions in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Tom Lakenen’s Lakenenland Sculpture Park. Tom invites you to stop by and see for yourself, why the Detroit Free Press called Lakenenland, “The coolest unofficial roadside rest stop in the state.” His 37 acre park includes a Sculpture Trail, a winding road through the woods featuring more than 100 of Tom’s whimsical, colorful and sometimes “tell it like it is” Metal Art sculptures. These pieces showcase his tremendous talent for turning junk metal and scrap iron into awe inspiring, entertaining works of art. Lakenenland is free of charge and open 24 hours, seven days a week!
The Marquette Maritime Museum is a museum and lighthouse located in Marquette in the U.S. state of Michigan. Since 2002, the museum has been associated with the Marquette Harbor Light, a lighthouse that serves traffic in Marquette Harbor and adjacent waters of Lake Superior. The museum provides a wonderful education we to local schools in the form of free admission to the Museum and Lighthouse and children’s art/history workshops. They offer a winter lecture series, Maritime History on Tap, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company, and yearly events such as a Lyle gun demonstration and Ghosts of Lighthouse Point fundraiser.
Marquette Regional History Center
The Marquette Regional History Center is a 501c3, private non-profit organization that was established in 1918. The center relies on membership, fundraising events, donations, and admission fees to continue to provide for the community and visitors with high quality, educational programming and exhibits. The mission of the History Center is preserving cultural and physical history of our area to bring an understanding to the past and present, and provide a guide for the future. The Marquette Regional History Center not only maintains exhibits, artifacts and a research library, it is a forum for engaging the community and creating links between people.
The Peter White Public Library is a public library and community center in the City of Marquette, Michigan. The library building has stood at 217 North Front Street since 1904. An extensive renovation and addition was completed in 2000. The building also houses the Marquette Arts and Culture Center. The mission of the Peter White Public Library is to enrich the community through access to library services and cultural opportunities.
Shape and Sound aims to provide meaningful Art based experiences to students everywhere. Through the lessons, resources, and community that we we build, we aim to use Art to make connections across great distances. The Shape and Sound curriculum, instruction, and resources are all designed to empower students to be unique, authentic, and effective artists. The work that students will do through this program is unique to each student as they will have agency in their educational path leading them to take ownership in their own artistic journey. The individual tasks will require students to problem solve creatively as they face challenges modeled after being a professional artist.
Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum
The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum is a regional, interactive hands-on museum featuring exceptional and unique displays and related innovative programs providing a unique place for children and families to learn through participation. Each exhibit is the product of participatory design workshops which saw children and families designing all of the Museum’s exhibits. This is a very unique approach to museum development which has produced a delightful children’s museum, for and by children.
Lake Superior Theatre’s mission is to produce original and historical musical theatre and to showcase local, regional and national cast and crew. Our strategies include conducting arts and education outreach programs and introducing audiences to live theatre performances. A striking converted boathouse, LST is bursting with nautical artifacts, and is home to original summer musical theater celebrating regional history, culture and music traditions as well as other special events.
The Marquette Area Blues Society (MABS) was born July 4, 2003, by the founding members Terry Klavitter, April Lindala and Walt Lindala. The group is now a full-fledged 501c3 registered non-profit agency that produces an annual blues festival in downtown Marquette. They also generate regular newsletters for members and sponsors, host monthly educational blues series in collaboration with the Peter White Public Library in Marquette, and routinely bring in nationally touring blues acts for special performances. The mission of the Blues Society is to promote the appreciation of blues music & culture in the Upper Peninsula.
Marquette Choral Society is a mixed-voice adult choir comprising approximately 100 singers who come from a four-county region in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
They perform four to five live choral concerts annually, each featuring fresh repertoire and many in collaboration with orchestral musicians and guest soloists – while also working with regional radio stations to spread the music to a wider audience. They also commission and premiere pieces by accomplished composers, and often feature thematic programming that emphasizes collaboration.
From the 1860’s to 1900 immigrant bands made up of Cornish (e.g., the English Oak Band), Finnish, Swedish, German, and Italian musicians marched in parades and presented concerts in and around Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming. In the fall of 1887, the first official Marquette City Band was established when the entire Calumet Eureka Band, consisting of 14 members, was invited to move permanently from Calumet to Marquette. In 1929, John Longyear, Jr. circulated a petition and presented a plan to the city council for municipal funding to reestablish the band after a period of dormancy. The voters approved the measure, and Martin Johnson directed their first performance in 1929. The band has had an unbroken record of performance since then.
Marquette Folk Dancers
This recreational group was founded in 1968, and meets (nearly) every Friday night at 7 PM, at the Women’s Center Gym (Northern Lights Martial Arts Center). Our group has a good balance of people, so our repertoire favors partner dances. Our repertoire is primarily from all over Europe, highlighting Scandinavia, Great Britain, Central & Eastern Europe, and the Balkan countries. We have dances from Israel and a few from North America. Partner dances include set dances from all regions of Europe except the Balkans. Although the group is primarily recreational, we have performed at ethnic festivals and art fairs.
In Scotland, 1947, the first Edinburgh International Festival was created in an effort to uplift a war-torn community and bring the arts back to their previous splendor. After years of living under so much darkness and devastation, word of the festival spread quickly and several theatre companies showed up uninvited to the event. The companies were denied a spot in the Edinburgh International Festival, but they were not deterred. Instead of performing at the central venues with the other official festival artists, they performed their works on the outskirts in unordinary spaces. Thus, the spirit of Fringe was born, and continues to accentuate the value of unconventional artists to this day. The first North American Fringe was put on in Edmonton, Alberta in 1982, and now, over 250 Fringe Festivals are hosted world-wide. The purpose of Marquette Fringe is to provide an accessible platform to create, participate in, and experience art. We are committed to maintaining low barriers to entry for both participants and attendees. Marquette Fringe encourages experiential and non-traditional forms of art through a diverse creative pool of participants. We seek to provide an event where anyone can have a transformative experience through art and community.
Formed in 1981 by Ellen Clement, former director of music at Marquette Senior High School, The Marquette Male Chorus has had consistent membership under the direction of fine musicians. The chorus has tackled almost every genre of music, from opera to show tunes and rock and roll. They have hosted the Associated Male Choruses of America Big Sing in 1983 and joined the Marquette County Chamber Chorale to perform the Faure Requiem at Carnegie Hall in March of 2007. The chorus performs two concerts in Marquette each year, in the spring and fall, and also participates in the Christmas Tapestry each December. They also perform at local churches, nursing homes and start the UP 200 sled dog races each January in Marquette by singing the National Anthems of both the US and Canada. The group is currently under the direction of Wayne Hanmer.

Marquette Rockestra
The Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s mission is to create, provide, and promote professional performances of orchestral music through collaboration with residents and music educators of the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Five times a year, we offer exciting concerts—classical, pop, newly-commissioned works, old favorites, concerti, symphonies, tone poems, and everything in between—to Upper Peninsula residents who come from as far as a hundred miles away. We also offer outreach concerts through the Besse Center in Escanaba. In 2021-22 we will celebrate our gala 25th anniversary season, a massive milestone to those who, back in 1996, launched the organization with little more than faith, hope, and passion for good music. Each year we employ dozens of area musicians, engage the interest of hundreds of area youth, and provide high-quality music to thousands of area patrons. We are a keystone of Marquette’s vibrant cultural life that makes it a mecca for area art-lovers and helps fuel the area’s tourist industry. The MSO stands on three pillars: ticket sales, private donations, and foundation grants. We are grateful for assistance from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council
PAAC has owned and operated the Historic Vista Theater in Negaunee, MI since 1973. The first production was “Oklahoma” on April 30, 1975. Over the years PAAC has put on a variety theater productions and concerts. Including Spamalot, West Side Story, The Hobbit, Lombardi, Anatomy of a Murder, Annie Get Your Gun, Chicago, Godspell, Annie, The Full Monty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and 15 productions of Richard O’Brien’s “Rocky Horror Show” (2000-2015).
The Pine Mountain Music Festival (PMMF) was founded in Iron Mountain, Michigan, in 1991 by Laura Jean Deming, a cellist and member of the orchestra of Lyric Opera of Chicago. That first season was primarily chamber music, but by 1992 opera was being produced. The festival primarily runs from mid to late June in Keweenaw, Marquette, and Dickinson counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The PMMF is one of only a few summer festivals nationwide producing a season of professional opera, chamber music, and other genres of music, including folk and jazz – it is the only one to tour all its acts in multiple cities hundreds of miles apart. The festival has presented 36 operas, including three commissioned world premieres: The Children of the Keweenaw (2001), The Diaries of Adam and Eve (2007), and Rockland (2011). It also premiered a new string quartet, Oday Daywayigun (2010). Educational components have been an integral part of the festival: the Orchestra Fellowship Program (1994-2007; 2015); the Resident Opera Artist Program (1998-2015); the in-school program OPERAtion Imagination (2002-2014); and UPstarts, a program providing performance opportunities for emerging young artists of the Upper Peninsula (2012-current).
Superior Arts Youth Theater is a year-round arts organization that seeks to empower young people by providing educational, performance, and technical theater opportunities. We have been part of the Marquette community for 20 years, beginning as a civic enrichment program through the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center and eventually forming an independent 501(c)3 in 2015. We’ve steadily grown over the years and now serve nearly 200 youth ages 3-18 from Marquette and its surrounding communities each year. SAYT’s typical programming consists of 3-4 large cast musicals, a one-act play festival, performances at community events, and a summer acting camp and workshop series each year. By increasing access to the performing arts, SAYT builds confidence, creates positive connections, and through practicing commitment, teamwork, and responsibility. Youth performers and technicians from Marquette, Alger, and Delta counties collaborate with adult designers, directors, and musicians on SAYT productions.
TaMaMa Dance Company (TDC) is a non-profit modern dance performance group based in Marquette, MI. TDC was founded in 2015 by Tara Middleton, Maggie Barch, and Marissa Marquardson with the goal to increase awareness of dance as an art form through innovative performance and dance education. TDC provides opportunities for the community to happen upon dance by taking it off the stage and installing it into new and surprising places, making the art form more accessible. In addition to traditional theatre venues, they have been known to perform in art galleries, on a rock wall, or on the street corner. The unique constraints offered by these unusual venues are an important part of the creation process, allowing room for structured improvisations as well as choreography. TDC often collaborates with other dancers and choreographers as well as artists in other fields (musicians, poets, sound engineers, costume designers, lighting designers, photographers, visual and multi-media artists) to create mixed medium works of art that inspire and stretch perceptions of what dance can be. In their four years together, TDC has created numerous original pieces, some of which have been performed for Marquette’s Halloween Spectacle, Harvestfest, Bach Festival, the Marquette Arts and Culture Center’s Annual Art Awards and Art Week, the U.P. Art Prize Reception, Northern Michigan University Dance Concerts, the Blueberry Dance Festival, and The Nutcracker Ballet.
U.P. Shakespeare Festival / Wolf’s Head Theater Company
Founded in January of 2015, Upper Peninsula Shakespeare Festival’s mission is to provide the people of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and beyond with bold, engaging productions of Shakespeare’s plays, to build upon and support local arts and culture, and to promote the appreciation of timeless literature by all people. In January of 2018, a subsidiary of UPShakes’ was created with the intention of creating provocative, relevant and captivating modern theatre in the Upper Peninsula- Wolf’s Head Theater Company. UPShakes’/Wolf’s Head is a 501(3)(c) non-profit, sustaining itself off of ticket sales, donations and sponsorships and operating as the Upper Peninsula’s only professional theatre organization. Our company offers a professional theatre experience that illuminates, challenges and connects our audience with the shared human experience. Together, we tell stories of old and new that will leave a mark: Theatre with a bite.
Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus
We’re a mixed chorus who love to sing in the barbershop style and many others. We love to harmonize, increase harmony in our community, and have a great time together. We are open to everyone at all ability levels!
Art on the Rocks is a respected art show, attracting over 140 artists and 10,000 people each year. This fine arts and crafts festival is in Mattson Lower Harbor Park, between Marquette’s historic downtown and the Cinder Pond Marina on beautiful Lake Superior. To ensure that the displayed artwork continues to meet the highest standards, 30 percent of the show is made up of artists invited based on a scoring system used by show judges, and the other 70 percent are selected through a jury process.
Lake Superior Art Association, founded over 60 years ago, is a premier organization in the region that promotes and supports the visual arts throughout Marquette County. LSAA is a nonprofit organization that holds an annual exhibit in the Deo Gallery, displaying its member’s work in a wide variety of mediums. Proceeds from their annual art show, Art on the Rocks, are returned to the community to support various art-related activities and an art education scholarship at Northern Michigan University.
Liberty Children’s Art Project
Liberty Children’s Art Project (LCAP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit art enrichment organization for rural children founded in 1995. The organization’s mission is to provide an environment of discovery, creativity and experimentation in the visual arts for youth in the greater Marquette and Alger County of Michigan’s rural Upper Peninsula. Classes are offered through LCAP in special school days, after school and summer art enrichment programs to children of all ages. Our programs reach underserved children in isolated areas that often have no other access to the arts. This opportunity empowers students through self-confidence and creative learning.
Marquette County Quilters’ Association
The Marquette County Quilters Association (MCQA) began in 1978, when a group of parents from Silver Creek Elementary School in Marquette, Michigan, decided to make a raffle quilt to help pay the expenses for a local boy who had been burned in a house fire. The group so enjoyed their time together, working and talking about quilting, that they decided to organize a group to meet regularly. They arranged a meeting place and set a date for the first meeting of the MCQA. Twenty enthusiastic quilters attended that very first meeting. More than 40 years later, MCQA remains a vibrant, enthusiastic group of quilters from all over the Marquette area. Our members are dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the art of quilting, patchwork, applique, and fiber arts.
Out Back Art Fair is located in Marquette Michigan, the last full weekend in July. Shiras Park, also known as Picnic Rocks, is where the event is held. There are many food options including local food trucks and vendors to enjoy while wandering throughout the fair.
Superiorland Woodturners
Superiorland Woodturners is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners serving the central and northern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Formed in 2007, we have 30-35 members and meet monthly at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center on the lower level of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. The meetings, which are open to the public, run from 6:30- 9 on the second Tuesday of the month, excluding June and July. They include a demonstration as well as a show and tell segment about pieces brought in by the members of the club. We also have a workshop from 1-5pm on the day of the meeting which provides a hands on learning experience. Our main focus is on education of the members of the club and the general public with a secondary goal of getting to know each other and each others work.
Yarnwinders Fiber Guild of Marquette
We are a loosely woven group of handweavers who meet monthly to promote the art of handweaving and related fiber arts. We have about 15 active members and our monthly meetings consist of a short business meeting, show & tell and a fiber related program. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month in the lower level of Peter White Public Library at 6:30 pm. We do not meet in July and August. We meet off site in April and December. Dues are $10/year and are collected in Sept/Oct. We have participated in the Midsummer Festival, the NMU Folklife festival, Finn Fun Fest, the Iron History Museum fall harvest days festival, Alpaca days in Skandia. Our members participate in regional art festivals and have their items for sale in many area galleries and shops.

The U.P. The UPACA is a 15-county affinity group comprised of artisan and art organizations, historians and culture bearers, as well as allies in related sectors such as tourism and recreation, local and regional government, and economic development.
