Gigs & Bytes (Online) - Exploring the Data Forest

Presented by Innovate Marquette SmartZone at Online/Virtual Space

Join us where tech, art, and science converge to see firsthand the advancements happening here in the Upper Peninsula's state forests. In collaboration with Campfire CoWorks, LucidCoast, and the Conservation Data Lab, this Gigs & Bytes - Creative Nights will have you learning about research that's happening in our neck of the woods. This online presentation will include live breakout sessions where the audience will get experience with similar tools to those utilized by the Conservation Data Lab.

The Conservation Data Lab is a newly formed small group of people learning to code, create, and conserve. Conservation challenges and opportunities are growing, as are datasets used to identify them. By exploring, summarizing, and visualizing large datasets, they aim to empower decision-makers.

Currently, their team is analyzing LiDAR data for a preserve in Washington state, assessing forest degradation in the Upper Peninsula, identifying mine-land restoration priorities in the Central Appalachian region, developing code for semi-automated raster data processing, drafting a web app to explore the ecosystems of the US and assessing ecological conditions of the Driftless region.

The team behind the Conservation Data Lab is a collaboration of experts and students including Randy Swaty, Anna Wright, Laura Slavsky, Myles Walimaa, Cassidy Downing, and Brandon Caltrider.
