CineArts--A United Kingdom

Presented by Peter White Public Library at Peter White Public Library

CineArts Films, a series devoted to foreign and independent films, presents A United Kingdom on Friday, September 15 at 6:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room. This is a BYO Dinner Event.

Set during the 1940s, this biographical romance begins in Britain with the prince of Bechuanaland, Seretse Khama, studying law to prepare himself for becoming the leader of his country.  While at university, he falls in love with a British white woman, Ruth Williams.  Neither of them could be prepared for the backlash from both countries as well as South Africa who sees their marriage as an affront to apartheid.  In this environment of political and diplomatic turmoil, they must struggle to maintain their love and help their country become the Republic of Botswana.  Starring David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Tom Felton, this 2016 British film is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours 21 minutes.

A United Kingdom will be introduced by Associate Professor Chet DeFonso, Department of History, Northern Michigan University, whose research focuses on the relationship between the media and political, social and cultural institutions in Britain from the mid-19th century to WWII.
