All City of Marquette storm drains eventually empty into Lake Superior. Do your part to keep stormwater clean.

Gitchee Gami! It’s all about Lake Superior! The largest, deepest, cleanest and wildest of the five Great Lakes. Thanks to the City of Marquette Arts and Culture team for choosing WATER as the theme for Art Week 2022. The SWP has a long history of working with the City of Marquette to protect and restore Lake Superior including its beaches, dunes, wetlands, tributaries and of course…its watersheds.

In celebration of Art Week, the SWP is pleased to announce more opportunities for volunteers to get involved in caring for Lake Superior. Every day of Art Week the public is invited to join SWP staff and the Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) in conducting citizen science monitoring on Lake Superior. Volunteers will be rowing the 23 foot Scottish skiff named the “Spark” which was built by community members, donated to the SWP and christened by none other than Dr. David Suzuki! The Spark is a work of art in itself.

Interested volunteers (residents, tourists, students, etc.) can rendezvous at the Marquette Yacht Club and help collect data that will be used for climate adaptation, reducing micro-plastics and improving water quality. Throughout the summer SWP will be offering even more community events including beach clean-ups, beach grass planting and creating a more climate-resilient community. It’s worth noting that SWP volunteer programs have received the Governor’s Community Service Award. Join us!

Marquette is often held up as model for other coastal communities to replicate when it comes to Great Lakes protection. The SWP has always supported the arts as a powerful tool to raise awareness about Great Lakes protection. That is why the SWP is thrilled to be a part of Arts Week and looking forward to assisting with the newly announced Lake Superior Cultural Arts Trail.
