The Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC) is inviting artists, community members, and organizations to apply to design and paint text-inspired, site-specific artworks on the surface of the Holly Greer Bike Path in Marquette.

Artist Prompt: The parallel between words and paths is powerful and can present us routes toward knowledge, understanding, and connection. The Words to Live and Bike By project links language, exploration, and artistic expression to invite Marquette and its visitors to connect as a community. The five new locations, stretched along the Holly Greer Bike Path, link touchpoints within our city. The words selected should help elicit positive change, whether from pure joy or thoughtful introspection. The ongoing hope with Words to Live and Bike By is to remind us that all art can transform our experiences, even in our everyday lives.

...We move, we think, we imagine, we create, we consider, we talk, we connect, we change, we grow...

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

Design a mural that creates a unique and imaginative interpretation between a word and a specific location. Your submission must include your desired word, the design/illustrations to occur within that word, and a ranked list of locations from this year's potential mural sites, listed below. Colored pencil or fine tip markers are recommended for design drafts, though digital designs will also be accepted.

If selected, your word will be stenciled at the mural location. A 1.5" white outline will be painted around each letter to stand out against the black bike path. The provided letters must be integrated into your mural and remain legible once it is completed. You may choose to paint solely within the outlined areas of the text and in the two (2) feet surrounding the painted letters on the bike path. Provided paint colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, cyan, and magenta, along with black and white for tints and shades to be mixed on-site as desired. Completed murals will be 6ft. in height and vary in length depending on number of letters.

Your chosen word will be stenciled using a font similar to the one on the third page of the attached application. Please use these letterforms as you are creating your design.
