UP200 Sled Dog Race

The UP200 is one of the top 12-dog mid-distance races in the Midwest, as well as being an Iditarod qualifier.

The UP200 is one of America’s premier 12-dog, mid-distance sled dog races and draws mushers from around the United States and Canada. The first UP200 was run in February, 1990, after two years of planning by sled dog racing enthusiasts. The current race covers approximately 230 miles from Marquette to Grand Marais, with a return to Marquette along the same trail. 2018 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2018

9:00 am –  Race Headquarters opens at the Holiday Inn of Marquette. Headquarters will be manned 24/7 during the race but is only open to the public during the following hours:

Wednesday and Thursday: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
Friday: 9am – 8pm
Saturday: 9am – 7pm
Sunday: 10am – 3pm

You’ll find displays, information, merchandise, souvenirs, videos, and the Silent Auction.

Silent Auction (at the Holiday Inn) begins Wednesday, February 14th and will run from 9:00 am to closing hours daily, closing at noon on Sunday.  Winners to be notified immediately following auction closing.

6:30 pm – Pre-Race Banquet and Bib Draw  ( Holiday Inn )- Mushers draw numbers to determine their starting position. Tickets available in the merchandise room at the Holiday Inn. The public is welcome!

The musher banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn at 6:30 pm and is open to the public. (Tickets are $ 20.00 ) Mushers are required to attend as their bib numbers will be handed out. (This is the order mushers will leave the chute). All mushers receive one banquet ticket with registration. Additional tickets will be available at the door, or can be purchased in the merchandise room at the Holiday Inn. Come join us to see who is first out of the chute for both races.

9:00am – 8:00pm – Silent Auction and Merchandise

10:00 am – Vet Check for all UP200 and MNR teams at the Riverside Auto parking lot. Don’t miss seeing the real athletes of this race receive a pre-race exam by race veterinarians.  Public welcome.

UP200 bag drop location will be announced at the musher meeting.

10:00 am – 1:00 pm – UP200 Musher’s Brunch, downtown at Marquette Commons on S. Third Street (down the hill from the Post Office).  Sponsored by the Mining Journal. This is mandatory for UP200 mushers.  There will be a $25.00 penalty for those who did not attend.

12:00pm – 2:00 pm – Midnight Run Chili Feed, Public Service Garage (sponsored by Public Service Garage, Chili from Wendy’s)

6:30 pm – Opening Ceremony for the 27th anniversary of the UP200 and Midnight Run

7:00 pm – UP200 START

Both the UP200 and the Midnight Run start in downtown Marquette in front of The Mining Journal.

8:30 pm – estimated Midnight Run START – the Midnight Run will start 30 minutes after the last UP200 musher has left the chute, but not before 8:30 pm.

Prince of Peace Church – bonfire – food & beverages available.  On M-28 in Harvey. Cheer the teams as they pass!

Evening bonfire at Lakenenland Sculpture Park on M-28 – a great place to watch the teams go by!

Chatham MNR Checkpoint: The Midnight Run teams will arrive at the Chatham Checkpoint sometime after midnight.  Here they will take a mandatory 5-1/2 hour layover before starting back to Marquette along the same trail. The public is welcome at this checkpoint, located at the MSU Agricultural Station.  Food will be available and it’s a great place to see the Midnight Run teams!  Teams will begin leaving Chatham around 5:00 am to race back to Marquette.

Midnight until approximately 2:30am – UP200 mushers arrive at Wetmore upbound checkpoint for a mandatory 5-hour layover. This checkpoint is not open to spectators so dogs can get maximum rest and our checkpoint host can maintain appropriate traffic levels in their facility. We expect the first teams to leave Wetmore for Grand Marais between 5:00 and 6:00 am Saturday morning.

Cheer on the Midnight Run Mushers – Midnight Run mushers begin arriving at Lakenenland in Marquette around 9:00 AM, depending on conditions. Updates will be posted during the race.

9:00am – 9:00pm – Silent Auction and Merchandise

10:00 am – Jack Pine 30 Race begins at Larry’s Family Foods in Gwinn The Jack Pine 30 Sled Dog Race starts and finishes in Gwinn, Michigan, with the traditional start at Larry’s Family Foods. The finish line will be at the First Baptist Church of Gwinn, located on North Billings Street.

First musher in Grand MaraisAll Day in Grand Marais – the UP200 mushers will be arriving at the Grand Marais checkpoint in the late morning and early afternoon.  They will begin the return trip to Wetmore in late afternoon and into the evening. This is a great place to see the UP 200 teams up close. Visitors can stroll through the lot and take photographs. Breakfast 9:00am – 11:00am. Pie sale, lunch all dayGrand Marais Silent Auction from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm  and UP200 merchandise on sale all day. Starbucks will have coffee by the timing gate.

4:00 pm – Midnight Run Awards Banquet will be held in Marquette at 4:00 pm at the Masonic Building and is open to the public.  Tickets will be available at the door,  ( $15.00 ) or can be purchased at the merchandise room at the Holiday Inn (Midnight Run mushers will have received one ticket with their registration).

12:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Come see the UP200 mushers finish at the lower harbor in Marquette.

Silent Auction will be ending at the Holiday Inn at noon. Winners will be notified immediately after.

Merchandise is available at the Holiday Inn from 9:00am – 3:00pm.

8:00 am – The UP200 awards breakfast will return to the HOLIDAY INN and is also open to the public. UP200 mushers will receive one ticket.  Additional tickets will be available at the door ( $15.00 ).  There will be a UP200 finishers’ meeting and a UPSDA Board meeting after the breakfast.

Merchandise will be available 7:00am – noon.
