National Prevention Week: Walk for Awareness

Community Action Alger-Marquette (CAAM) is announcing a new community event centered on SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week (NWP). NPW culminates in May recognizing the important work that has been done in communities throughout the year to inspire action and prevent substance use and mental disorders. SAMHSA’s NPW is May 9 through 15, 2021. Each year around this observance, communities and organizations across the country come together to raise awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health.

This year CAAM is organizing a Walk for Awareness on Saturday, May 15, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The event will be held along the multi-use path between Lower Harbor and Picnic Rocks. We have invited many local organizations and nonprofits- such as Great Lakes Recovery, Pathways, United Way, St. Vincent de Paul, and others- to be present with tables set up along the route with information materials, resources, handouts, and more. There will be signs along the path promoting mental health, substance misuse, suicide, and poverty awareness with links to resources and help.

We are inviting the public to join us on May 15, 2021, from 10-2 to bring awareness to these topics, reduce harmful stigma that surrounds them, and offer resources to those who need them. Wearing awareness shirts, masks, ribbons, pins, hats, etc. is highly encouraged!
