April Children's concert -Hiawatha On TAAP (traditional acoustic arts performance)

The Hiawatha Music Coop announces their upcoming trio of traditional music events. The next concert in the 2019 “Hiawatha on TAAP” (Traditional Acoustic Arts Performance) series is on Wednesday, April 17th from 6-8pm at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. The April event will be a  “Music and Dance Party” for children featuring Jeff Krebs, aka ‘Papa Crow’ and friends.  Local perfomers Jerry Mills, Corinne Rockow, Josh Thompson, Jamie and Doug Kitchel, Kerry Yost and Harry South, Papa Crow, Troy Graham, John D. Beck, Sue Demel, Michael Waite, Dan Truckey and John Gillette and Sarah Mittlefehldt will entertain with a mix of traditional tunes for children.  Also featured will be a ‘musical petting zoo’, a collection of instruments compliments of Yooptone Music in Marquette. The idea behind a ‘musical petting zoo’ is to provide children with an opportunity to see, touch, play, hear and familiarize themselves with a wide variety of instruments.  This event is $5 for Hiawatha Music Co-op Members and $7 for Non Members and $3 for youth 13-17, free for children under 12. Complimentary snacks will be provided by the Marquette Food Co-op.

The second traditional music event will feature western North Carolina old timey duo, Frank and Allie Lee.  The Hiawatha Music Co-op and the Peter White Public Library invite music lovers to a weeknight music concert with Frank and Allie Lee on Thursday, April 25 at 7:00 pm in the Library’s Community Room.  In addition to the concert, the Hiawatha Music Co-op will host a workshop entitledOld Time Songs—History, Harmony Singing, and Jamming at their office at 1013 N. 3^rdStreet # 9 on Friday, April 26 from 12:00-2:00 pm.

Frank and Allie Lee, are a vocal-driven old time duo from western North Carolina.  Their music ranges from blues to bluegrass, yet remains rooted in the old time aesthetic.  Frank’s nylon string fretless banjo is the dominant instrument with guitar; slide guitar, and Allie’s banjo and harmonica adding to the musical texture.  As the core duo of the longstanding string band, The Freight Hoppers, Frank and Allie have traveled extensively as touring musicians. Frank, as a founding member of The Freight Hoppers, has impressed audiences all over the United States, Canada, and Northern Europe with his signature claw hammer sound.  Allie, as founding member of The Whipstitch Sallies, a band from Indiana, has toured throughout the Midwest, North Carolina, Colorado, and Hawaii.  Together, they spent a couple of weeks in France in May 2018, and are currently planning concerts around the country.

The last of the trio of upcoming Hiawatha Music Co-op events will feature accomplished traditional fiddle players, House of Hamill. Brian Buchanon and Rose Baldino, a dynamic duo from Pennsylvania, will offer up a lively and engaging concert of jigs, reels and many of their own tunes. This event will be held in the new Hiawatha Music Co-op office in the Village Shopping Center on Friday, May 3rd from 7-9pm. The Superior Culture will offer a taste of their kombucha beginning at 5:30.

Rose Baldino and Brian Buchana met 10 years ago, late one night backstage at a theatre in rural Pennsylvania.  Brian’s band, Enter The Haggis and Rose’s group, Burning Bridget Clearywere sharing a stage that evening, and the two bonded over a love of Irish fiddle tunes.  Their paths crossed a dozen times over the next decade on the road, but it wasn’t until the Folk Alliance 2014conference in Kansas City that they finally became musical collaborators. Burning Bridget Cleary’s guitarist and drummer had their flights canceled at the last minute, and Rose (in desperation) asked Brian to grab a guitar and join her onstage. The two performed with virtually no rehearsal for over an hour, and their connection was powerful and immediate. A few months later Brian moved from Canada to Philadelphia, and as a tribute to the first tune Rose ever taught Brian, House of Hamill was born.   Brian and Rose are both accomplished traditional fiddle players and classical violinists, and despite being young, have over 25 years of writing and performance experience between them. Together, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting, unpredictable original songs while also breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are confident and unique lead vocalists, and the blend of their two voices in harmony is hypnotic and irresistible.

Whether House of Hamill is playing songs from their debut album “Wide Awake” (September 2016) or stomping through a set of original jigs and reels from their follow-up “March Through Storms” (2018), their chemistry onstage is always engaging and often hilarious. In the summer of 2018, their quirky all-violin cover of “Sweet Child Of Mine” went viral, amassing over 15 million views and more than 400,000 shares on Facebook in just a few weeks, and was picked up by publications all over the world.
