The Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC)invited artists, community members, and organizations to apply to design and paint text-inspired, site-specific artworks on the surface of the Holly Greer Bike Path in Marquette.
A temporary public art installation featuring a series of motivational words along the City of Marquette multi-use trail, all designed and painted by various local artists and groups in two phases (2020, 2023).
The “Words to Live and Bike By” project began during the summer and was executed in the fall of 2020 amidst the COVID pandemic. It aimed to uplift spirits and promote positivity within the community. MPAC sought to engage community members and organizations safely during the pandemic.
In the first phase, they strategically selected words like “Respect,” “Remember,” “Dream,” “Hope,” and “Gratitude” to be painted at various locations along the Holly Greer Bikepath to encourage respect for the environment and spread a message of hope and gratitude. In the second phase, the project allowed artists to choose words while expanding to locations deeply embedded in the community, beyond the shoreline focus of phase one.
